Amy Brenneman began her career in the TV series Middle Ages in 1992, appearing in three different episodes. She starred as Det. Janice Licalsi in the American drama TV series NYPD Blue from 1993 to 1994.

She then appeared in a few small roles before landing her first major role in the 1995 film Heat. Amy appeared as the lead female actor in a number of films over the next two years, including Fear, Daylight, and Nevada.

In 1998, she played Mary in the black comedy film Your Friends & Neighbors. She returned to television as the creator and executive producer of the American legal drama series Judging Amy, in which she portrayed a divorced single mother who works as a Family Court Judge in Hartford.
