She then appeared in a few small roles before landing her first major role in the 1995 film Heat. Amy appeared as the lead female actor in a number of films over the next two years, including Fear, Daylight, and Nevada.

In 1998, she played Mary in the black comedy film Your Friends & Neighbors. She returned to television as the creator and executive producer of the American legal drama series Judging Amy, in which she portrayed a divorced single mother who works as a Family Court Judge in Hartford.
