In 2002, Boehlert received a music journalism award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers for his article series on the radio industry. He also highlighted Clear Channel Communications’ dominance in the radio and concert industries.

In 2006, he became a member of Media Matters for America (MMFA), a content analysis organization. Boehlert published Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush, in which he argued that the mainstream media failed to adequately scrutinize George W. Bush’s administration. In his 2009 book, Bloggers on the Bus, he discussed the rise of blogging in US politics.

After ten years as a senior fellow at MMFA, Boehlert launched his own MMFA newsletter, Press Run, on the Substack platform in 2020. His final article for Press Run, published on the day he died, questioned the media’s coverage of the Biden administration, writing that it was exaggerating the president’s achievements.

He previously worked as a staff writer for Salon and Billboard, as well as a senior fellow for Media Matters for America.
