Smuggling of Cocaine and Arrest
On October 14, 2014, he was apprehended by Belgian police. The man was accused of smuggling 467 kilos of cocaine and conspiring with a criminal organization (along with a greengrocer and a relative of his wife who worked in Antwerp’s port) to smuggle the cocaine (street value 23 million euros) into Belgium hidden in a pallet of South American bananas.
He was sentenced to ten months in prison, eight in Antwerp, and two at home with an ankle bracelet. On June 30, 2015, he was released on house arrest with an ankle bracelet.
Between 2016 and 2017, he appeared in the SBS6 television documentary “The Frank Masmeijer case.” Furthermore, he contributed to Nick Dijkman’s book “Frank en Vrij.” He was sentenced to eight years in prison and a EUR 48,000 fine on October 13, 2017, for smuggling 467 kg of cocaine.
The punishment was so severe, according to the press judge, because he had ordered the forging of delivery notes in an attempt to recover the cocaine hidden in the banana batch.
On appeal, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison and a fine of 90,000 euros on June 27, 2019. He was transferred from Belgium to the Netherlands to serve the remainder of his sentence, which will expire at the end of 2021.
On July 20, 2022, it was announced that he was released at the end of June after King Willem-Alexander pardoned him at the request of the judge and Minister for Legal Protection Franc Weerwind, but against the wishes of the Public Prosecution Service.
