Health Concerns
Jen was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy at the age of 38, despite being a health freak, cross-fit enthusiast, cyclist, and non-smoker. Cardiomyopathy is a condition that causes our hearts to work harder to pump blood to the rest of our bodies.
Jen first experienced symptoms in the summer of 2016, complaining of exhaustion and shortness of breath all of the time.
She tried to dismiss the symptoms, blaming them on her hectic schedule. In September, her fatigue and shortness of breath became more severe. She went to see a doctor after her body began to swell significantly.
She initially thought it was an allergy, but after a medical examination, she discovered it was cardiomyopathy.
The doctors advised her to take a 6-month break from work, but she refused. Jen decided to keep working despite all of her efforts to get to where she is now.
In addition to her medication, she wore a LifeVest to work every day for six months. The vest would monitor her heart’s activity and alert her if it slowed; if necessary, it would shock her heart into action.
Jen continued to work while wearing the LifeVest for six months. The medication worked perfectly. Her heart was only pumping at half capacity, and she was removed from the heart transplant waiting list after two years.
Jen is in the best shape she’s ever been because she learned to look after herself and take frequent breaks. After recovering from cardiomyopathy, she became an active member of the American Heart Association, raising awareness about heart disease. She warns people not to ignore the disease’s early symptoms.
