He played quarterback for the Ohio State University football team during his senior year after graduating from Centerville High School. Similarly, when John Cooper was named head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1988, he was the very first player to commit to the team.

He and his father, Jim, became only the second father-son duo to serve as captains for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as his father had served as co-captain with offensive tackle Jim Tyrer on the 1960 team.
