Sicily Sewell and her mother co-own Pinky and Reds, a soul food restaurant in Berkeley, California. Sicily and her mother opened the restaurant as part of La Cucina’s incubator program.
This nonprofit food incubator in San Francisco focuses on addressing equity issues in business ownership for women, immigrants, and people of color.
Pinky and Reds were discovered working on different soul food-inspired sandwiches on the UC Berkeley Campus in the MLK Student Union Building in Berkeley, California.
On November 21, 2019, they celebrated the restaurant’s first birthday. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant closed in March 2020.
They then launched a Go Fund Me campaign to reopen the restaurant. With the tagline “Coffee for the Soul,” “Pinky and Red’s” later established its coffee e-commerce brand.
In addition, in 2019, she was hired as the chef of Colors, a high-profile restaurant in Manhattan, New York City.
Colors restaurant was founded in 2006 on North Of Houston Street in Manhattan, New York City, by Restaurant Opportunity Center (ROC) United, a nonprofit organization founded by survivors of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Sadly, the restaurant closed in 2017. However, the restaurant reopened in 2019 with the mission of celebrating black food and culture in America, and she was excited to work in a restaurant with a mission.
Sicily Sewell explained;
“I wanted to make really good, bad-ass food, to do something to tell black people that I admire them, and build a space where people of color don’t have to change or bargain with who they are to feel accepted.”
she added;
“I want to celebrate the beauty of blackness and the magic that happens when we come together for a good fellowship around food.” So that’s what this space is for me, giving you black excellence and history — through the food, hospitality, and music,”
Unfortunately, the restaurant closed just one month after reopening, as ROC United’s executive director Sekou Siby informed her via text. Sicily described the restaurant’s abrupt closure in January 2020 as a tumultuous experience.
“ROC was not living up to its ideals,” Sicily Sewell stated. Systems were not in place to help Colors succeed, despite the fact that this location embodies everything ROC stands for.” She also told the New York Post that the restaurant’s reopening was merely a “test Drive.”
